How to Output the Non-Printable GS Separator in a Data Matrix Barcode

Many GS1 Data Matrix barcodes contain a Group Separator (GS) character (ASCII 29). This is a non-printable control character used to separate variable-length data fields, such as Application Identifiers (AIs).

Since the GS character is non-printable, it may not be visible when the scanned data is displayed in applications like Notepad, Excel, or your business software. Some software can recognize the GS character automatically, while others may require it to be replaced with a printable symbol.

Replace the GS Separator with a Printable Character

TEEMI barcode scanners allow you to replace the non-printable GS separator with a printable character for easier viewing and data processing.

Common replacement characters include:

• Comma (,)
• Period (.)
• Vertical bar (|)
• At sign (@)
• Other printable symbols

Many of our customers prefer using the vertical bar (|) or at sign (@) because they make it easy to identify field boundaries when importing data into spreadsheets, databases, or custom applications.

For example:

Original GS1 Data Matrix Output

Replace GS with "|"

01012345678901281725063010ABC123|21123456

Replace GS with "@"

01012345678901281725063010ABC123@21123456

This makes the scanned data much easier to read and process.

How to Configure Your Scanner

We've attached the corresponding configuration barcode that replaces the GS separator with a printable character.

Simply:

1. Scan the configuration barcode.

2. Scan your GS1 Data Matrix barcode again.
3. The scanner will output the replacement character instead of the non-printable GS separator.
